We see the big picture

While many labs only look at Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) to assess thyroid function, we believe it is critical  to also measure Free Triiodothyronine (fT3), Free Thyroxine (fT4) and TPO antibodies.

The biomarkers we test for

Free T3

Free T3 is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Levels of this fluctuate when individuals have an under or overactive thyroid gland.

TSH

Thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH, is the hormone responsible for controlling hormone production by the thyroid gland. The hormone TSH is considered the most sensitive marker for screening for thyroid diseases and conditions. Our thyroid panel is ideal for TSH testing at home and will tell you how your levels compare to normal TSH levels.

TPO Antibodies

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies are antibodies that can bind to thyroid enzymes, suppressing thyroid function. They are elevated in a condition called Hashimoto's disease, which is the most common type of hypothyroidism in the USA.

Free T4

Free T4 is the predominant hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Levels fluctuate when individuals have an under or overactive thyroid gland. Testing your free T4 with this thyroid function test lets you see if your thyroid hormone production is at a normal level.

Reverse T3

Add-on

RT3 is a metabolite of T4. Typically, when T4 loses an atom of iodine—a process known as monodeiodination—it becomes (T3), the active thyroid hormone. The body also converts T4 into rT3, which is an inactive form of T3 that is incapable of the metabolic activity that is normally carried out by T3.

Vitamin D

Add-on

Some observational studies have found low blood levels of vitamin D in patients with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s as well as hyperthyroidism due to Gravesʼ disease. It is not clear from these studies if low vitamin D is a cause, a consequence or an innocent bystander in the development of these common thyroid conditions.

Easy as 1, 2, 3

It was so simple and easy! I usually have to drive 2 hours to see my endocrinologists. With Paloma, I was able to see a better doctor and faster! The kit  is also convenient. It took me 5 minutes to collect a sample

Isabel

Sacramento, CA

For the first time I have the feeling that I have a doctor who can own my care for hypothyroidism. My PCP and OBGYN were not always aligned on the best treatment for me.

Juliette

Austin, TX

I knew my regular thyroid tests were not complete. Paloma helped me to understand a lot of things regarding hypothyroidism and I love the community feature.

Christie

San Diego, CA

Paloma was really able to provide me with a personal approach to care. On top of that, Paloma Health is saving me so much time as I usually get a blood test every quarter

Emily

Houstan, TX

With Paloma, I was really able to keep track of my lab results for the first time. I can also do a blood test when I want to and I have finally the tool to monitor my condition.

Paulina

Nashville, TN

My Dr has a 6 weeks wait and when you feel that the symptoms are coming back you don't want to wait. With Paloma, I was able to do a blood test, see a doctor and get a prescription so quickly.

Olivia

San Jose, CA

My PCP never told me that my diet can have an impact on my condition and the severity of my symptoms. Paloma's nutritionist, Nicole, was great at creating a health plan for me.

Nicole

Springfield, TN

I always felt like it takes my initiative to get in touch with a doctor and make an extra appointment. With Paloma I am on auto-pilot mode!

Helen

San Remo, CA

I love that I can see a doctor online. Before I started to use Paloma and with depression, I did not feel like going to my doctor. Frequently I called ahead of time and canceled.

Laura

San Francisco, CA

For the first time, I understand my bloodwork . I could not get a referral to an endocrinologist because my PCP didn't want to make a referral. He always believed that he had it under control).

Maggie

Redding, CA

My condition was managed mostly with medication, and that's fine. But for the first time, I get a lot of advice outside of meds - diet, reducing stress, etc. There isn't much of that out there unfortunately.

Sophia

San Francisco, CA

I always had questions that could be answered. E.g. natural remedies, things that could help overall. Paloma providers talk about the medical side but also other aspects of care that could be helpful

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my HSA or FSA or insurance to pay for Paloma Health?

In most cases, you can use your HSA/FSA account to pay for your at-home thyroid blood test.

Your Paloma Health test is authorized by a physician, so it should fit the guidelines for most HSA/FSA coverage.Your Paloma Health test kit purchase can be submitted for reimbursement through HSA/FSA benefits.

As always, be sure to check with your specific HSA/FSA benefits coordinator for clarification on the specific requirements for reimbursement including usage, protocol, and qualifications.

Do I need to stop taking my supplements or medications before the test? What about fasting?

You don't have to stop taking your thyroid meds or supplements to take this test. You also don't need to fast.

Are the test kits covered by my insurance company

This is an at-home health test that doesn't require an office visit. Unfortunately, most health insurance companies do not cover the cost of these at-home blood tests. However, Paloma Health's tests are typically priced lower than out-of-pocket costs associated with such visits.

As always, this will depend on your own coverage but we encourage you to check with your insurance company to see whether they will cover all or some of the cost of our at-home thyroid test.

When discussing coverage, it is important that your carrier understands specifically what the test is and what it is testing for. Be sure to mention the following key points:
- The test is taken at home via a blood sample and analyzed by our partner laboratories
- The test measures: TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Anti-TPO Antibodies
- The report measures the above markers and reports on whether they are high, low, or within the normal healthy range.

How do I know if the Paloma Health test is right for me?

The Paloma Health at-home kit is for both patients who have been previously diagnosed with hypothyroidism but also for people who think they might have hypothyroidism. In both cases knowing your hormone levels and making sure that they are within range is very important.

Are these the same laboratory tests that I would get from my doctor?

Yes. We worked with top thyroid doctors to select a panel of the most comprehensive set of biomarkers that can help patients understand their thyroid function. For each hormone you test, we’ll provide plenty of context on what the hormone is and why it’s important. The thyroid gland is complex and hormones are one (important!) piece of the puzzle.

How accurate are the results from Paloma Health?

Very! Every Paloma Health test is ordered by a doctor. A physician will also review your results before they are returned as well and your sample will be processed in a CLIA and CAP accredited lab.

What type of info will I get in my results?

Your Paloma Health report comes with personalized explanations around each thyroid hormone and what your levels mean, all in human speak.

How often should I retest?

We recommend to retest every 6months if you did not get a new prescription. If you had a recent change in dose or medication, we recommend to test after 8 weeks. You should also retest whenever you feel that the symptoms are coming back.

Is it safe to complete a blood test while pregnant?

Yes, our blood tests only require a prick of the finger. Our other tests may require saliva or urine samples. Paloma Health tests are considered safe to complete while pregnant. Normal ranges change for pregnant patients, please reach out to your physician to double check normal ranges for pregnat women.
