In the first part of my story, I talk about how at the age of 34 I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s Disease, and breast cancer within one year. As you might expect, it was a tough year with many challenges.
Finding a doctor who truly understands thyroid health and knows the correct tests to run was what helped me receive a correct diagnosis so that I could begin to make necessary changes to heal.
There are several things that I did to turn my health around, and here I’m sharing five of those steps.
My thyroid doctor ran a complete thyroid blood test panel which gave her a better idea of the best treatment for my condition. Thyroid patients need a customized plan for their health care, and in my case, I needed medication that contains both Triiodothyronine hormone (T3) and Thyroxine hormone (T4) due to my body’s inability to convert the thyroid hormone itself.
Many thyroid patients don’t convert thyroid hormones properly due to missing enzymes, sluggish liver, or adrenal fatigue. In some cases, medication that has both T3 & T4 is necessary (as opposed to one or the other). This is why it’s so important to find a doctor that is literate in thyroid health because a textbook approach may not work for all body types or medical conditions.
In order for my body to convert the thyroid hormones properly, I learned that I first needed to detox my liver. A large percentage of the hormone conversion is done in the liver, so a sluggish liver prevents this conversion from taking place as effectively.
I added daily juicing to my diet to keep my liver clean and to help heal from the cancer, as well. I juice green leafy vegetables, beets, carrots, ginger, and other fruits and vegetables on the daily.
In addition, I took milk thistle and dandelion herbs daily to assist in the detoxification process.
After learning of my thyroid related issues, my doctor discussed with me the importance of daily vitamin intake. Many thyroid patients have a vitamin and mineral deficiency in magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin D, iodine, and zinc among others. Addressing these deficiencies helped my energy levels, reduced my goiter size, and aided my depression and anxiety symptoms.
Before being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I participated in high-impact aerobics and would feel horrible afterward. I didn’t understand how my friends could leave the gym feeling energetic and alert, whereas I would feel exhausted to the point of collapse. I soon discovered that those with thyroid disease may not respond well to high-impact movements because it puts more stress on a body that is already experiencing adrenal fatigue.
I added walking, light jogging, and water aerobics to my daily routine and felt so much better! I knew that I was getting the exercise that I needed while also allowing my body time to heal. Finding exercises that you enjoy will help you maintain a healthy fitness routine.
Learning to eliminate foods that promote inflammation was a major turning point in my health. Removing sugar, dairy, gluten, and hydrogenated oils made a huge impact in my overall health.
I also added foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as wild caught salmon, cod liver oil, walnuts, and flaxseed to my meals. This also helped improve my mental focus, achy joints, and depression.
1 cup frozen pineapple and mango fruit blend
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 packet stevia
Handful of fresh spinach leaves
Blend everything together in blender and enjoy!
Strawberry and Spinach Salad with Grilled Chicken
1 grilled chicken breast, sliced
Large plate of fresh spinach
Combine all ingredients and enjoy!
Mid afternoon snack
Sliced cucumber sprinkled with lemon pepper seasoning
Handful of walnuts
Sautéed Salmon with Green Beans and Tomatoes
1. Heat a large skillet with olive oil over medium heat
2. Season salmon with paprika, chili powder, salt and pepper
3. Place salmon on one side of skillet and add a large handful of green beans and halved cherry tomatoes that have been seasoned with salt and pepper to the other side of the skillet
4. Cook everything until tomatoes vegetables are tender and salmon is cooked through. Top the fish and veggies with fresh lemon juice. Serve with a garden salad.
For beverages, I enjoy water infused with fruit, iced and herbal tea, and sparkling water. By replacing unhealthy, inflammatory foods with foods high in nutritional value, I experience reduced joint pain, higher energy levels, and better mental clarity.
Each meal in the menu above takes less than 15 minutes to have on the table. With a little planning, it’s easy to add healthy food choices to your meal plans.
