Hashimoto's and autoimmunity

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder, which means it occurs when immune cells attack healthy tissue instead of protecting it.

In the case of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, immune cells mistakenly attack healthy thyroid tissue, causing inflammation of the thyroid.

If Hashimoto's thyroiditis attacks your thyroid to the point that the gland can no longer produce enough thyroid hormones for your body to function properly, then you will develop hypothyroidism.

causes hashimotos

Causes of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Doctors aren't entirely sure why the immune system, which is supposed to defend the body from harmful viruses and bacteria, sometimes turns against the body's healthy tissues.

Some scientists think a virus or bacterium might trigger the response, while others believe a genetic flaw may be involved. A combination of factors — including heredity, sex and age — may determine your likelihood of developing the disorder.

Facts and Tips about Hashimoto's

Hashimoto's thyroiditis affects 14 million people in the United States alone, making it not only the most common form of thyroiditis but also the most common disorder in America

The main risk factor for developing Hashimoto's thyroiditis is having a pre-existing autoimmune condition, such as type 1 diabetes.

Women are 7 times more likely to have Hashimoto's thyroiditis than men.

Selenium can help reduce thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies, which when elevated, cause damage to the thyroid

Thyroid hormone replacement therapy is the only treatment available for Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Fortunately, it's highly effective at managing the condition.

Diet changes can help with Hashimoto's. There is no specific diet proven to treat everyone with Hashimoto's. An individualized approach to nutrition is necessary

Learn More About Paloma

What is Paloma Health?

Paloma is an online medical practice focusing solely on elevating the care and experience of patients with hypothyroidism.

We know how hard it is to be responsible for staying on top of your labs, scheduling regular visits, communicating with your doctor between visits, and making sure you feel your best with all aspects of your care.

We have built Paloma to provide exceptional care to our patients and relieve some of the burden of managing life with hypothyroidism.

+

How does the process work?

Booking a consultation is very easy.Once you have created your account, you will be able to book a consultation in no time with one of our thyroid doctors. We'll ask you to answer a few questions about your health and your history with hypothyroidism. If you have recent lab results you will be able to upload them so that our doctors can review them.

Few minutes before your appointment, you will receive an email with a link to connect with your thyroid doctor online! And that's it.

After your consultation, your doctor will share with you his notes and recommendations

+

Are the consultations covered by insurance

Consultations with Paloma Health doctors are covered by insurance. We accept most major insurers.  Your form of payment will not be charged until the amount of your co-pay is confirmed with you by a Paloma representative.

In the case that we are not in-network, we can provide a super bill that you can submit for out of network reimbursements.

+

If my medication dose changes, who prescribes the new or adjusted meds for me?

Your Paloma physician will communicate any dose changes to your pharmacy of choice.

+

How will I interact with my Paloma physician?

Through a video call.

A video call is an amazing way to have a great interaction with your physician. The only thing you need is a smartphone or a computer with WIFI or a strong signal.

+

What makes Paloma Health different?

We believe the way you feel is more important than your lab numbers.
