Euthyroid means your thyroid is making the right amount of hormone for your body's needs. It's a description of thyroid function, based on blood tests. It isn't a disease.
How is euthyroid status determined?
Doctors usually look at two blood tests, TSH and free T4. TSH is made by your pituitary gland and tells your thyroid how much hormone to produce. When thyroid hormone is low, the pituitary makes more TSH. When thyroid hormone is high, it makes little or no TSH.
If both results are in the normal range, you're generally considered euthyroid. A TSH test shows whether there may be a thyroid problem, but it can't show what's causing one.
Euthyroid, hypothyroid and hyperthyroid
| Term | Thyroid hormone | Typical TSH |
|---|---|---|
| Euthyroid | Normal | Normal |
| Hypothyroid | Too low | High |
| Hyperthyroid | Too high | Low |
Can you be euthyroid and have Hashimoto's?
Yes. You can have high thyroid antibodies with normal thyroid hormone levels, and some people have no symptoms at this stage. The American Thyroid Association says thyroid hormone treatment isn't required when TSH and free T4 are normal. You do need regular TSH checks, because low thyroid hormone can develop over time.

Can you be euthyroid on thyroid medication?
Yes. Being euthyroid on medication means your dose is keeping your levels in range. It doesn't mean your thyroid condition is gone, so don't stop your medication unless your doctor tells you to. Blood is usually rechecked 6 to 8 weeks after you start or change a dose.
What is euthyroid sick syndrome?
Serious illness that isn't related to the thyroid can change thyroid test results, even when the thyroid itself is healthy. Read more about euthyroid sick syndrome.
What if you're euthyroid but still have symptoms?
Fatigue, weight changes and brain fog have many possible causes, and normal results don't mean your symptoms aren't real. A thyroid specialist can review your full results and history with you. Read why you may have symptoms with normal labs, or see a Paloma thyroid doctor.
